The Queen is a substantial paper based sculptural work created in contemplation of the feminine divine and the impact of human activity on Earth.
To paraphrase AI, the Anthropocene is the current, unofficial geological era defined by significant human impact on the Earth's climate and ecosystems, replacing the Holocene era.
Personally and culturally, A LOT has happened since I started layering paper on this bust purchased for a pittance in 2019 at the Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale in New Jersey.
It has been a privilege to work on a sculptural piece for such a long time. Since 2019, The Queen has evolved through several personas on the journey, as I have added and subtracted countless layers and a plethora of decorative elements.
In 2024, I created the serpent base as a reference to dormant divine feminine energy that lies in wait to surge through the body, bringing spiritual transformation, something now needed on a mass scale.
In 2024, although not finished, The Queen was on display in the SOMA Studio tour. After moving across the country to Oakland, California, this year in mid-2025, I decided to enter her into an International Craft show, which gave me the deadline I needed to finalize her.
I will probably write more about the work and process, but for now, this is a peek into the most time-consuming piece I have created!
